Have we had a 'lucky' season?
Lack of injuries until the last couple of months has masked a paper thin squad and shown how reliant we are on our star players (arguably our only world class player in Rice for example).

We have won a record number of games for the club in a Premier League season, but I am struggling to think of many occasions of us blowing teams away and playing well. Leicester, Wolves early doors. Palace and Burnley away maybe?

The rest seem to be rather attritional/lucky victories. Even some of our draws have been fluky like at Fulham. I tend to think we are in a false position, and our goals difference attests to that.

We have a decent full strength XI and not much else. It is no surprise our results and performances have fallen away with Rice and Ogbonna out. It was quite telling how toothless we were yesterday against Everton with our third highest ever signing ZERO GOALS BENRAHMA starting and flunking chances/ promising positions as per usual.

Re: Have we had a 'lucky' season?
Not really.

We have had some great performances from several players. Rice and Soucek in midfield have been one of the best partnerships in the league, Coufal, Ogbonna and Cresswell would also be a good shout for team of the year. Lingard has come in and torn the place up. Even Dawson was unbelievably good for a couple of months.

And yet we’ve had key injuries at the wrong time. We’ve had some shocking decisions against us, as usual. We’ve hit the woodwork more times than any other team.

So the only “luck” we’ve had is that so many players have played so well.

Nothing lucky about it at all.

You do realise two of those games you mentioned Benrahma was outstanding.

Re: Have we had a 'lucky' season?
Just curious, but how many points would we have without Benrahma’s assists? Would it have made it a mid table season?

Re: Have we had a 'lucky' season?
GD is a good guide to how good a team are, ours is good but about 8th best in the league.

Newcastle finished 5th one year but with a GD of +5, about 8th best in the league.
Next season they finished 16th.

Next season will be a big challenge. We need two or three years of consistency.

Re: Have we had a 'lucky' season?
It feels like we've been slightly fortunate on the injury front, but what is the average amount of injuries a club has at anyone time? Antonio has missed not far off half the season through injury and Masuaka has missed two thirds of the season, Ogbonna has missed sizeable chunks too.

We do struggle without our best players, but the same is true for all clubs. Compare the difference in Man United in our first game against them when Fernandes and Rashford were on the pitch compared to how they were in the first half.

Re: Have we had a 'lucky' season?
Great season with a shit load of good performances, but I guess as you only sit there wanting to criticise certain players instead, that passes you by.

Noticed this season how many fans we have that are bigger spastics than Harry kane.

If we challenge for the top 6/7 again next season, then no.

Re: Have we had a 'lucky' season?
We have had some hard fought games where we have come out on top but in a season where we have hit the woodwork 21 times (most in the league) and I'm thinking have had less penalties than any other team I think the games we were comfortably the better team are :
Arsenal a
Wolves h
Leicester a
Liverpool a
Sheff U a
Leeds a
Burnley h
WBA h
Palace a
Villa a
Sheff U h
Arsenal h
Wolves a
Leicester h
Burnley a

Re: Have we had a 'lucky' season?
I wouldn’t say lucky. I think Moyes has found a (mostly) positive way of getting the best from what he has. And that formula has caught out many ‘better’ teams time and time again. Playing much of the season with either a shit striker (Haller) or with no formal/recognised striker at all has been remarkable. Soucek/Rice/Coufal/Lingard exceptionally good and not far behind Antonio/Ogbonna/Cresswell. A spark of inspiration and many players stepped up. I think we may not be as successful next season unless there is a plan B and C to cope with all the teams who have now worked this unique formula out.

Re: Have we had a 'lucky' season?
Not been unlucky at all overall
Been lucky in some games where we shouldn't of won but some games we shouldn't of lost , most teams would say the same.
We shouldn't of drawn against Arsenal after being 3-0 up and bossing it.
But hitting the woodwork is not unlucky it's more often bad finishing. Coufal should of scored on Sunday I was certain it was going in . His finishing has been dreadful on several occasions for one. But we are LUCKY to have him.
Some poor selections have not helped at times not sure if that is unlucky or lucky.
I would of liked Coventry to have come on on Sunday, that could of been lucky . It wasn't as if Everton were pressing us.

Maybe we have punched slightly above our weight. But only slightly.

Re: Have we had a 'lucky' season?
I’d say we’re punching above our weight by a country mile, this squad was expected to fight relegation and rightly so. The only games I can’t think where we’ve been lucky is Fulham home & away, villa at home we got battered and maybe Brighton at home where thought we was real lucky to get a point. Had luck with injuries up till the last month or so and about time to.

What a wanky thread. Have you even watched us this season? Great recruitment, brilliant team spirit, excellent work ethic and some really decent football.

The fact that Benrahma annoys you so much is a bonus,

I would add Everton (a) and Southampton (a).
And maybe Spurs (h).

What a pathetic joke of a poster you are, COYI. Your pathological hatred of one player has reached such epic proportions that you concoct a ridiculous thread just so that you can have another pop at your target. Just fuck off.
